MetroTV, The Lami-Lamihan festival, a traditional celebration of the Yakan people, witnessed two joyous events on Thursday, as locals observed the 'pagtamat' - a Quran graduation of a young adolescent, and a traditional wedding ceremony.

Footage filmed in Lamitan City on the Philippines' Basilan island shows the graduation rituals of Rashid Malawian, a 12-year-old boy. Rashid was seen reading the Quran.

"It is compulsory for Muslims to know the teachings of the prophet Muhammad and read verses from the Quran by heart," stated Abduwa Ajahum, an Imam.

"As early as 7 years old, kids here are taught to read Quran in Madrasa," added Vicky Siason, an elder Muslim Yakan leader.

Footage also shows a conventional Yakan wedding, with the groom and bride performing various customs, before formalising their marriage.

"I’m happy but a bit anxious, because there are a lot of people watching us," shared 18-year-old groom Hudzrhie Malarial.

Both the bride and groom had their faces covered with 'tanyak', so they would be recognised as celebrants and protected from 'evil spirits', according to Earl Francis Pacilan, professor of culture and traditions.

The Yakan's Lami-Lamihan Festival is an annual cultural celebration showcasing the rich traditions of the Yakan tribe, an indigenous Muslim group native to the southern Philippines. The festival's name means 'social enjoyment' in the Yakan language.

It was formally introduced as a town feast in 1983 by former mayor Wilfrido Furigay and commemorates the founding of Lamitan by Datu Kalun.
