How To: Shotblasting Concrete to De-Dust For Epoxy Coatings

Resinous coatings prefer a clean canvas. Manufacturers may specify clean, dry, and contaminant free, but these are subjective terms that give little direction of how precisely to achieve what’s required. In their defense they can’t know a floor’s history, surrounding environment or compressive strength. This is why the contractor should be prepared to at least meet a minimum readiness threshold for their own peace of mind. After grinding, a concrete floor looks more clean and bright. That’s because the cement paste and sand have been ground into a uniform crystalline powder. After shotblasting, the difference in color should give away how much cleaner the floor really has become.

The video documents a basic de-dusting process to remove grinding dust. The floor was first vacuumed three times. The shotblaster still got it cleaner in one pass.
