Dr. Ayesha Khaliq explained how Sore or Cracked Nipples pain during Breastfeeding

Sore or cracked nipples are common. Pain during breastfeeding is a signal for a problem. Even though sore nipples are usual during breastfeeding in the initial days. Normal soreness or pain usually occurs around a minute when the baby first holds on to the breast. If the pain is serious even after it seemed to resolve is a sign of a problem and need to be corrected. Other complications may include cracked nipples, bleeding nipples, or bruised nipples.

Before and During Breast Feeding

Make sure that your baby is holding on correctly
To reduce the soreness, kick off breastfeeding on the side that which is less sore and then changeover to the other side
Switch your baby position with every feeding

Common breast care and treatments for sore nipples

Permit some breast milk to dry your nipples. Breast milk is made up of natural skin softeners to fight against infection, which helps nipples to keep healthy
To lower the pain, apply cool stuff to your nipples after breastfeeding
Take qualified support like cotton bras with wide, non-elastic straps will help your breasts without any irritation to your nipples

Avoid breastfeeding pads that are having plastic liners
Washing your nipples with soap removes the natural lubricants

Cracked or Bleeding Nipples

If your nipples are sore or cracked or bleeding, okay to carry on with breastfeeding. To soothe your discomfort, use the tips provided above.

Consult your doctor if it is too painful to feed through nipples or even after you've tried home treatment
A fever of 101°F or higher
A rocky area in your breast and you are not able to empty your breast
