This is a group of 5th graders attempting the activity for the first time. I’m sure it would have gone more smoothly on the second try!



Each student has one rhythm stick. Start with the stick in the Left hand.

LH tap stick on floor 3 beats (rest 1 beat)
LH tap fist on knee 3 beats (rest 1)
RH tap floor 3 beats (rest 1)
Flip & pass

Helpful hints:
1. Teaching the students the term accelerando gives them a reason to listen to the beat during the knee tap.
2. When passing, Student should hold stick out with their Right hand and allow their neighbor to grab it (with their Left hand to start the sequence over). Do not set the stick on the floor - as the tempo increases it becomes more difficult to pick it up off of the floor in time.
