Subaru Head Gasket Problems: Top Issues Explained. In this video tutorial I will show you how to fix Subaru head gasket problems.

Here are some of the problems:
Internal head gasket leaks
The internal head gasket leak affected some Subaru cars from 1996 to 1999. These included the Outback, Legacy GT, Forester, and Impreza, which used the same engine during this period. The internal leaks led to the engine overheating since it lost coolant from the leak. Some of the noticeable symptoms of this issue are:
● The coolant overflow bottle may smell of fuel, exhaust, or sulphur and have an oily residue.
● High coolant temperature readings from time to time.
● Overheating during long drives or when driving up a hill.

External head gasket leaks.
This external head gasket leak issue affected car models using 2.5-litre engines EJ251, EJ252, and EJ253 from 1998 to 2005. This included some models like the Forester, Legacy, Impreza, Outback, and Baja. The affected models would leak oil at the head gasket and coolant at the left side. Typically, this would not lead to the engine overheating. However, the coolant could mix with the oil, reducing its lubrication efficiency. This would, in turn, lead to increased friction, which could lead to damage.

Warped or cracked heads
Prolonged overheating can lead to warping or cracking of cylinder heads. This can also be caused by using poor-quality materials or improper torque procedures. This issue can affect any model. However, it is more prominent in models with detonation or overheating problems resulting from poor maintenance or age. Some symptoms of damaged heads include uneven idle, poor performance, or misfiring. To minimize the chances of this issue occurring:
1. Keep your Subaru well-maintained.
2. Change your engine oil and coolant regularly.
3. If you notice oil or coolant leaks, get them checked and addressed promptly to prevent costly repairs and engine damage in the future.
4. Keep an eye out for any signs of overheating and resolve them.

Here is the solution to try for these issues:
Replace the head gasket
The solution to all these issues is replacing the gasket with a multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket. Do not go for aftermarket replacements, as they will likely not provide a secure seal. Replacing the head gasket may be more technical, requiring experience and specialized tools. It is therefore recommended that you seek the services of a professional mechanic.
Regular maintenance and early detection are the best remedies to avoid head gasket problems or further damage.
