Before and after of a staircase we recently completed in Spring, TX.

We removed the original stain finish with a finish stripper, sanded down with 8-grit sand paper, followed by 220 grit sand paper to smooth out. Make sure the the surface is free of debris and any dust.

Highly recommend to paint the stair risers and stringers first and leave the treads last to stain.

You can use any stain finish you prefer--we used an oil based Black stain finish followed by a semi-gloss polyurethane clear coat/sealer.
