Centuries ago, girls from the Dalit families were dedicated to goddesses- to worship and serve them. A system that started as a spiritual practice gradually became a systematic sexual exploitation of women from oppressed communities particularly the dalit communities - Madiga, Madar and Holeya. According to a survey in 2007, there are more than 46,000 devadasis in Karnataka. In 1982, under the Karnataka Devadasis (Prohibition of Dedication) Act, the system was banned in the state. But the system refused to leave roots from different districts of Northern Karnataka. It mostly affected Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, Ballari, Raichur, and Kalaburagi. This practice can be still found in Bagalkot district. There are around 40 women who are devadasis. The new law promises to bring changes in the lives of these women.
