한 주간 외신 속 인태 안보이슈
Welcome to Issues and Insiders.
It's that time of the week yet again during which our panel of foreign journalists share their thoughts and more on regional matters.
This week security is at the forefront.
For more I have Andres Sanchez Braun here in the studio.
Andres it's good to have you here.
I also have Nicola Smith with us.
Nicola welcome back.
1-1) Andres, let's begin on the regional security front.
Earlier this month, defense leaders gathered in Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue and while a bilateral exchange between Washington and Beijing did not take place, some analysts believe the Dialogue itself remains a pivotal "platform for countries to communicate."
First then, let's begin with the potential reasons behind the absence of a one-on-one between China and the U.S.
1-2) And Andres, regardless of the bilateral interaction between the U.S. and China and speaking as a journalist covering geopolitical tensions, do you believe the defense forum in Singapore is an important channel of communication among countries?
2-1) Now Nicola, I believe you were in Singapore to cover the Shangri-La Dialogue, and you wrote a piece on China warning the U.S. to stay away from its waters.
Do tell us a bit about your coverage, and the overall atmosphere of the defense gathering this year.
2-2) Nicola, according to the media here in Korea, there was heated media coverage of the event this year given the unprecedented security challenges facing the globe.
Do you agree?
I mean, what was the atmosphere within the media room like?
3) Andres, beyond tensions between Beijing and Washington, there was talk between the European Union and South Korea about Ukraine's need of ammunition.
Now, the Yoon administration has made it clear that it promotes a non-lethal aid policy for Ukraine, with a window of some shift in policy IF there is a "large-scale attack on civilians, massacre or serious violation of the laws of war."
And that is according to President Yoon Suk Yeol in an interview with Reuters.
Do you believe the chances of a shift in policy are high?
4) Nicola, staying in Singapore.
An exclusive coverage by Reuters disclosed a regular meeting of the world's spy leaders on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue.
What more can you tell us?
5) Again, Andres, do you suppose such exchanges serve to provide nations like the U.S. and China with more opportunity to better address tensions?
6) Nicola, taking to Twitter, you shared that Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup shed light on the "harshest human rights reality" in North Korea, urging for "collective" regional action against it.
Aside from advancing its concerns over North Korea's hostile weapons ambitions, South Korea appears to be boosting its efforts to raise awareness about the regime's atrocities against civilians.
How do you care to explain this reality?
7) Andres, speaking about North Korea.
Kim Jong-un has reportedly ordered local authorities to crack down on suicides in the country.
Do tell us about this unfortunate reality up North and about Kim's latest secret order.
8) Meanwhile Nicola, Seoul and Beijing are currently engaged in a war of words following allegations by the Chinese Ambassador here Xing Haiming that the Yoon administration was aligning with the U.S. against China.
What are your thoughts regarding this latest diplomatic standoff between the two countries?
9) Andres, do you see this diplomatic spat between Seoul and Beijing leading to broader repercussions?
10) Finally, on a light note, Nicola, you recently covered the arrest of a British man who attempted to free-climb Lotte World Tower here in Seoul.
Tell us more.
All right.
