The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola delivers a keynote address during the annual EU budget conference, that brings together a wide array of stakeholders to rethink a future budget with the Union policy priorities at the centre by making it more focused, simpler and impactful. .

The next long-term budget will power the Union shared vision for the future in a context of growing geopolitical, economic and societal challenges.

Parliament has already outlined its position on which priorities to invest in, the structure of the budget and the resources that go into it. MEPs say that EU investments from 2028 to 2034 must respond to the changing geopolitical and economic realities.

They want the EU to be ambitious and invest in strategic autonomy, better handling of economic hardships and fighting the climate crisis.

Funding should also cover areas of defence and security but not at the expense of the EU’s long-standing policies, such as development of the single market, reducing social inequalities and combatting poverty.
