Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Nainar Nagenthran and other activists were arrested in Madurai while attempting to climb Thirupparankundram hill to light the Karthigai Deepam lamp, despite a Madras High Court order directing police protection for the petitioners.

Police refused permission citing public order concerns. The arrests sparked criticism from AIADMK leaders including Edappadi K Palaniswami, while Law Minister S Reghupathy cited a 2014 High Court order previously accepted by the Jayalalithaa-led government to justify denying permission.
