I understand the legal aspects of this situation, but I personally don't support the trooper's approach. In a pet emergency like a dying dog, I believe the trooper could have shown more compassion. I've seen many videos on YouTube where officers help civilians in similar dire situations, even providing escorts to get them to their destination quickly and safely. It seems like a more humane response, especially when someone is clearly distraught over their beloved pet.

I, Trp. Holly Romero, was stopped at the signal light at the intersection of Highway 67 and Hervey Street facing east. I was in the left turn lane and received a green arrow. The vehicle in front of me turned left and as I began turning left in the intersection, a blue Hyundai Kona (AR 122ZCZ) with hazard lights activated failed to yield to oncoming traffic and proceeded to travel through the intersection without regard to the red light in their direction. V-1 began traveling westbound on Highway 67. I activated my emergency lights and turned around at the intersection and traveled after V-1. V-1 passed a truck pulling a trailer and merged into oncoming traffic in the business area. Traffic was congested at the time and multiple vehicles had to swerve to the shoulder in order to avoid collision. Due to the congestion of traffic I passed the truck pulling the trailer on the right shoulder and activated my emergency sirens. After following behind V-1 for a period of time, V-1 showed no signs of pulling over. I communicated to dispatch that I was in an active pursuit. V-1 continued to travel westbound on Highway 67 without regard to emergency lights or sirens. V-1 traveled approximately 2.3 miles and turned left into the Byreview Veterinary Clinic parking lot. Driver of V-1 (Robinson DOB 05/5/1989) exited with her hands up and stated her dog was dying and she had her emergency flashers on. I attempted to take driver of V-1 into custody and she pulled her arm away and resisted arrest. V-1driver was physically managed and was placed under arrest without further incident. V-1 was turned over to the possession of V-1 passenger. V-1 driver was transported to Hempstead County Jail and charged with misdemeanor Fleeing- Vehicle or Conveyance, Reckless Driving- 1st, Improper Passing on the Left, Resisting Arrest and Fail to Yield to Right of Way.
