Floods gripped cities and towns in Russia’s Orenburg region on Wednesday after Europe's third-longest river burst its banks, forcing over 100,000 people to evacuate. Video shows desperate Russian residents seeking refuge on rooftops and emergency services speed boats, while others try to salvage what they can from the ruins – including their distressed pets. In Orenburg, a city with a population of 550,000 – located about 750 miles east of Moscow, hundreds of homes were flooded and at least 7,700 people were evacuated as the Ural river rose swiftly beyond the critical level of 9.3 metres (30 feet). Residents in Orenburg said it was the worst flooding in living memory while Russian officials said it was the worst flooding in the area since records began. This comes after Russia evacuated around 2,000 people from their homes in the city of Orsk, after rising waters in the Ural River flooded riverside villages. Emergency services attempted to help residents into lifeboats after thousands of homes were flooded in the area when a dam burst on Friday April 5. #russia #floods #orenburg
