The first iteration of my Lego clock, as explained by 16-year-old me. This video is from back in 2021 and I hadn’t had much practice talking to the camera.

The clock is built with a mix of regular Lego System bricks for structure and Technic for other parts and as always there are a ton of gears. The clock is divided into two modules, one on top of the other. The bottom module contains the escapement and rewind mechanism, and the top contains the hands module and other indicators.

The weight on the clock is very heavy, but it still struggles to run the clock because there is so much friction in the gears. I once tried adding a simple “passing chime” on the minute hand shaft (one ding at the top of each hour) but the increased force required to lift the chime hammer, however small it was, was too much for the weight and the clock stalled. I took it off.

The escapement is actually not a very good escapement for a clock and I don’t recommend anyone try it if you’re terribly concerned about accuracy because it isn’t a deadbeat escapement. It is considerably dependent on the force at the escape wheel because of the shape of the escape wheel’s teeth are constantly applying force to the pendulum, so a heavier weight will make the same pendulum tick faster.
