Origin and Course: The popliteal artery is the continuation of the femoral artery, originating at the adductor hiatus in the thigh. It runs through the popliteal fossa, a key region behind the knee.

Branches:
__________
Genicular Arteries: Includes the superior lateral and medial, inferior lateral and medial, and the middle genicular arteries, which supply the knee joint.
Terminal Branches: Divides into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries at the lower border of the popliteus muscle, supplying the lower leg.

Clinical Significance:
____________________
Vulnerability to Trauma: Due to its location, it's susceptible to injuries, especially in knee traumas.
Aneurysms: Popliteal artery aneurysms are the most common peripheral artery aneurysms.
Occlusive Diseases: Prone to occlusive conditions, affecting blood flow to the lower limb.
