What is Valproic Acid (Depakene)?

Valproic Acid is an anticonvulsant agent. It increases brain levels of GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

It is available as Sodium Valproate and Divalproex Sodium. Sodium Valproate is available as tablets, oral solution and injection. And Divalproex Sodium is available as extended-release tablets.

Valproic Acid is used as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy for simple and complex absence or partial seizures. And Divalproex sodium is used for manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, and for prevention of migraine.
