Slow Speed Motorcycle Turn Instruction

Riders are introduced to two different types of techniques for turning a motorcycle. Depending upon several variables that can be broken down to this:

1) To turn a motorcycle below roughly 12mph, use counterweighting.

2) To turn a motorcycle above roughly 12mph, use countersteering.

Here are some crucial elements one must focus on to master the technique of slow speed turning.

HANDLEBAR USE
Turn the handlebar in the direction you want to go.

PROSTEERING
Ever felt locked up on your motorcycle and the handlebar didn't want to turn?

This situation can be avoided by relaxing your right arm and letting your left arm do all the work. Find a reference point with your vision in the direction you want to go.

COUNTERWEIGHTING
Counter the weight of your motorcycle. If you're trying to turn left, your upper body must move to the right. Consider opening your hips and chest to the turn. The more you lean the bike to scribe a tighter arc, the more weight will be needed to the outside of the turn.

You can find a wide open space and practice the first two essential elements of low speed turning.
