TEXT FROM THE HOMILY
In the first reading as well as in the gospel it speaks to us about the importance of marriage. Now, if you look at the writings of Pope John Paul II, he would always tell us that marriage is as bit of a vocation as priesthood is. In fact, if you look at all four of the gospels, Jesus always refers to himself as the groom. We the church are the bride. Now it's interesting essentially the marriage or the love that's within the marriage of a husband and wife is the closest expression of the love that Jesus Christ has for his church. Now if you look at these readings for this weekend it tells us that marriage accomplishes some of God's purposes and plans. So, what I want to do is I want to focus on that. How marriage essentially fosters love life and holiness. First love. Well ,the marriage between Jesus Christ and our church is based upon love. It's rooted in love. Jesus proves that as he lays down his life for us to save us and bring us eternal life. Well, the same thing holds true in the marriage between a husband and wife. It's based upon love. It's rooted in love itself. And yet that love influences everything about them. It influences their thoughts, their decisions, their words and their actions. More to it that love that they share spills over and touches the people in their lives, first their children and then their extended family. Their friends, their coworkers, their neighbors. But just as importantly their children, they learn love from their parents. They look at mom and dad and they see how love exists, and they learn from that. Well, the next thing is life. Well just as the marriage of Jesus Christ in the church gives us life, the spiritual life, well so too does the marriage of husband produce life. A husband and wife if they're blessed, they have the ability to have their own children but also too they'll be blessed with the gift of adoption but all the while both the husband and wife realize that they along with God are the authors of life and therefore they're always keenly aware of the awesome gift of life that God has given them. And they cherish it deeply. And just as importantly they teach their children to do the same. They recognized in their children that life, all life, should be respected and have dignity to it. And it starts in the family. Finally, holiness well just as Jesus Christ makes our church holy through the sacraments, well so too does a husband and wife. Each of them helps each other, motivates them, encourages each other, maybe even sometimes challenges each other to grow stronger in their faith in the spiritual life. Furthermore, both the husband and the wife, they recognize that they are the primary educators of their children in matters of faith and morals. And in doing so they create, and they start building what Pope John Paul II referred to as the domestic church within the family. See in doing so each member of the family then encourages and it motivates each other to grow in their spiritual life as well as their love of Christ. Friends, I strongly encourage you, take some time this week, you can't afford not to reread this first reading as well as the gospel. It teaches us that yes, marriage accomplishes some of God's purposes and plans and marriage is a reality that is deeply blessed by God. Furthermore, marriage is very reflective of God's love and relationship that he has with us as church.
