The event was a critical discussion of the Sahel region’s ongoing security crisis, especially in states like Mali and Burkina Faso where military coups continue to occur. The panelists underscored how much of the political and economic instability in the region emerges from long standing conflicts between the political elite and security personnel like with Mali’s military junta. They also highlighted the role of foreign interference and propaganda, from Russian mercenaries, for example, in further exacerbating these conflicts. Following their incisive analysis of failed state governance, as well as ineffective economic policy from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the panelists concluded by speculating on future developments and possible reform strategies.
