The Verger
A.
1. Albert Edward Foreman had been a verger at St. Peter's Neville Square for sixteen years.
2. The verger was asked to step down because he did not know how to read or write.
No, it was not a fair decision because though he was illiterate, Foreman had managed to perform his Godly duties without causing problem for sixteen years and also he was one of the senior most at St.Peter’s.
3. When the vicar asked him to learn how to read or write within three months, he humbly declined saying that he was too old a dog to learn new tricks and also he was not interested in learning.
4. Foreman had never learnt to read or write because he thought that the younger generations wasted so much time in reading and writing while they could be doing something useful. The cook once tried to teach him while he was young but could not learn.
He managed to learn the news by looking at the pictures in the papers and his wife was quite a scholar who helped him to write letters when ever he needed.
5 After the meeting, the verger calmly closed the door behind him and took a wrong turn on his way back home thinking about the pleasant dreams he had about being a verger at St.Peter’s Neville Square.
6. The verger had been a page-boy and had risen from fourth to first footman. He also worked as a butler to a widowed peeress.
He did not want to go back to that employment because it was a dreadful come down after being a verger of St. Peter's.
7. In the course of ten years, he owed almost ten shops and was making money hand over fist. He would go and collect money from all the shops every Monday and deposit it in the bank.
B. ans1. William Somerset Maugham does not necessarily disapprove the importance of reading and writing but instead emphasizes on the importance of determination and hard work. Albert Foreman became rich and successful despite not knowing how to read and write because of his hard work and perseverance. He had delivered his good service to God and the church and the best part of his life for the past sixteen years. But the new vicar complained about his inability to read and write as an excuse to let him quit his job as a verger. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because when he was walking down the street, he realized how well a little shop to tobacco and sweets would do. It was time to render unto Caesar what was Caesar's, in other words, after serving God for sixteen years, it was time to serve himself.
With patience and hard work, he became quite successful, and in the course of ten years, he owned almost ten shops, making money hand over fist. So in ‘The Verger' the writer emphasizes on the importance of working hard and that it is never too late to reach for a better life.

ans2. Albert Edward Foreman had an unimpeachable character. He performed his duty as a verger at Saint Peter's Neville Square, to everyone's satisfaction. He wore his gown with complacence because it was the dignified symbol of his office, without his gown, he felt a disconcerting sensation of being somewhat insufficiently clad. He had many gowns in possession, as he was working for almost sixteen years. But he had never been able to discard any of his gowns. He washed his old gowns, ironed it, wrapped it in brown papers and kept it in the bottom drawers of his bedroom.
He was fond of the old vicar and felt that the new vicar who had come from the East End did not quite understand the discreet ways of the fashionable congregation of St. Peter's.
In appearance, Foreman was tall, spare, grave and dignified. He looked like a duke. He had tact, firmness and self-assurance.
