“I am not going to see my mother again. I’m not going to meet my grandson.” These were the thoughts that ran through Galleguillos’ mind as rocks began to rumble above them and dust filled the air. This occurrence was to be the start of a 69-day involuntary stay, trapped under 770,000 tons of rock. On this fateful day, Oct 13, 2010, Galleguillos and 32 other miners had reported for duty as usual at San Jose Mine. None of them had an idea of what awaited them. It wasn't until they were deep inside the hole that the walls above them crumbled, with a huge mega-block stone covering the entrance. They would remain trapped in the hole for 69 days without access to the outer world. Galleguillos recounts the ordeal, explaining how they had to survive without a glimpse of hope. It wasn't until 17 days later that the rescue team managed to drill through to them and confirm that they were still alive. He says that these 17 days were the toughest as they had to believe without the assurance that help was on the way. For the remaining days of the 2-month stay in the hole, they kept on praying that the team outside would not give up and that they would continue searching for ways to rescue them. Many a times in life, we come across such situations of despair where no help seems to be coming. We have often undergone situations similar to the first 17 days when the miners stayed in complete darkness and had no glimpse of hope of rescue. In such moments, the light at the end of the tunnel usually seems so dim and we become weary of trying to seek it. However, we are told of a God who is a very present help in times of trouble (Ps 46:1). Many of the miners recount after the experience that God was the 34th miner in the hole. In their hopelessness, they were still able to experience numerous miracles because they believed and fainted not. Alex Vega, another miner also trapped, had been suffering from gastric ulcers. At the time of the catastrophe, he only had 3 pills left, in addition to the lack of food, his condition could only get worse. However, they recount that through prayers and constant belief, his health was preserved and they all came out alive. While tribulations are a sure occurrence in this world (John 16:33), we always have the assurance that our Lord cares and he is touched by the feeling of our infirmities (Heb 4:15). ‘Oh yes, He cares!” is the assurance repeated throughout this song. We sing it in dholuo (a local dialect in Kenya), but maintain the original melodious tune of the composer. We hope that you will find comfort in these words in whatever situation you’re undergoing. Galleguillos concludes, “You have to have faith, you can never lose your faith. Faith is nourishment … Faith is life.” So, be not dismayed, remain hopeful, believe in this God, believe in His word, and He will surely come in handy for you during the tempests of life.
