The first thing about cleft lip and cleft palate is that they create a state of shock for the parent as it is hard for them to accept that such a beautiful child has got such an ugly defect and it is heartbreaking for the family. So these people have a lot of sympathy, some people have a lot of revenge in the lower socioeconomic status and in some people ignorant people, it may lead to rejecting the child. However this in our society nowadays is rare, the child might have some speaking deformities and they may have difficulty in speaking certain words and they may not be intelligible to most people. These children may have abnormal development of the upper airway which may lead to ear infection and frequent ear infection can destroy the hearing and cause them both difficulty in speech as well as hearing. Because of the bad dentition, these children are more prone for having bad dentition and poor oral hygiene and dental caries and that adds to the misery. So dental caries leads to a lot of problems and a lot of complications if left untreated, they can have further complications like bad scar, damaged upper lips, damaged nose or improperly done cleft palate can have bad speech or poor speech. So not treating a cleft lip and cleft palate or badly treating a cleft lip and cleft palate can have a lot of complications. These can be avoided if we treat the patients correctly and appropriately with the skin surgeon.
