The second use of this video will be for those who take to course to have a reference to go to after the course if they forget or need an aide memoire. This incredible course shows Shoshie at her best as she takes us through selecting the correct primer or base coat depending on our preference or availability to selecting and using a skin tone triad of colours, the main thing to take away from this when selecting your skin tone colours is to ensure that they all come from the same set and from the same manufacturer. It does not matter at all whose paint you use so long as they are all from one brand / set to ensure when they are glazed they are one hundred percent compatible.
After the skin tones have been painted you should also select as Shoshie calls them three adjuster colours, these are; Magenta, used in minute amounts where there are more blood vessels in the skin like over bony areas. Turquoise, which is used to cool down the skin tone in shadow areas again in very small amounts. Finally a Pastel Yellow used to add warmth to skin that is exposed to the sun. Watching this caucasian skin tone class is an experience in itself as a lot of the steps taken by Shoshie appear at first glance not to make sence but as the miniature comes to life all is revealed and you get a better understanding of the process, Shoshie also touches on the subject of Object Source Lighting or OSL as it is better known.
After another stream joins Shoshie she decides to show how to paint an ethnic skin tone, although this is a very quick demonstration and not a class the colours used take most of the followers by surprise. Starting with a Brown base colour which is to be expected Shoshie then chooses a Dark Purple for the shadows, Orange Leather colour used minimally as a midtone, Bright Orange used over an even smaller area for the highlights and finally to use Shoshies terminology Golden Flesh to create an undertone by going two steps up on the contrast and then bringing it back down one step with the midtone glaze.
This course is a must see for anyone wishing to paint realistic skin tones at a high level, please remember to have reference material for any skin tone you are trying to replicate, and practice makes perfect, producing skin tones in the way that Shoshie does generally does not happen over night the more you do it the better you will become.
