T-Rex "GET IT ON" at 'Hit Kwiss" January 21st 1977

T-REX FOR A DAY, BUT "ROCK ST. TROP" FOREVER !

Philippe Debarge rang me at home a few days after this TV show - he had been in Germany and he just couldn't believe that it was me that he'd seen playing the drums with T-Rex - "Yep", I said, "Your eyes didn't deceive you".
On the 21st of January 1977, I was in a German TV Studio, recording a TV show called 'Hit Kwiss' - and I was doing it as part of the band "T-Rex". A lot of people will be surprised to hear that I wasn't playing the Bass, or Guitar, and I wasn't even there as a keyboard player, or a backing singer… No - this time I was there as a Drummer. The previous evening I'd taken a call from a great friend of mine - Tony Howard. He was Marc Bolan's manager and he was in a panic - he was looking for Skip, The Pretty Things' Drummer, because Marc Bolan was doing a TV show the following day - and for reasons that I can't remember, his Drummer had pulled out at the last moment. Skip was in America with the Pretty Things - Tony then said - "Hey! you play the Drums don't you? - Do you want to play Drums tomorrow on German TV with T-Rex"?), I didn't have any plans so I said… "OK". So that's how it was that I became the T-Rex drummer for a day. I met Tony and Marc and the rest of the band (Miller Anderson and Dino Dines), early the next morning at Heath Row Airport, and off we went. The first time I played either of the songs ("Laser Love" or "Get It On") was when I was sitting on the sound stage in the TV Studio in Stuttgart getting ready to rehearse the show. Hit Kwiss was a kind of a pop quiz with performances from various bands. On this particular show, those performances were supplied by T-Rex and Suzi Quatro. At Marc's insistence, I wore the most ridiculous 'cloth cap' for the show, but it was a very memorable day all the same. Sadly neither Marc nor Philippe are still with us, but at least Philippe's album that he made with The Pretty Things is available and is being enjoyed by a great number of people -"ROCK ST.
