Entrepreneurship-Through-Acquisition is going through a “third turning” but remains a compelling path for young professionals, say three ETA search experts.

Dustin Sellers, Managing Partner of Next Coast Legacy, tells Search Party that in today’s ETA market “there’s a lot more money, there’s a lot more mediocrity. Everybody and their mother is trying to get a piece of it. Are we going through a third turning? Yes we are.”

Sellers adds the fundamentals of good businesses haven’t changed, and that over the next several years, some 350,000 lower middle market businesses will change hands as the original founders retire. “There’s no better time to be buying a lower middle market businesses. [But] you’ve got to kiss more frogs. We had to literally go kiss ‘em. Now you can talk to them on Zoom to find out that they suck.”

“I cannot think of a more compelling, more exciting, better post-MBA opportunity for young aspiring entrepreneurs,” says A. J. Wasserstein, the Eugene F. Williams, Jr., Senior Lecturer in the Practice of Management at the Yale School of Management. “Small businesses are cool, and if you like doing that then you should do it,” says Daniel Lazier, a search fund entrepreneur and the founder of Skyline Crest Partners, a California-based search fund. Lazier is a co-author of the Yale study.
