How to use your laptop in a car - power inverter for your cigarette lighter

When my wife and I drove 15 hours to LA from Portland, and 15 hours back, we wanted to be as productive as possible and keep up with work. Our iPhones allow us to tether our computers so that we had access to the Internet the whole way. But our batteries weren't going to last the 7-9 hours we'd be in the car each day.

So I found a gadget to allow us to plug in a laptop to our cigarette lighter. It's an inverter and it allows a 3-prong plug and a USB cable to be connected. This Stanley Inverter was a great purchase allowing us to work from our car while on the road for hours. One note - it doesn't work when the car is turned off, so it may not be the best bet for camping, but during the drive, it's a great way to take advantage of your cigarette lighter and improve your productivity.

Of course, this isn't a great idea if you are road tripping solo - I wouldn't encourage you to use your laptop and drive at the same time. But maybe you could recharge the laptop while driving - and use the internal battery when you stop for the night.
