Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!

The all new VIP EXJ Sigma features the tried and true sigma core with its low 2.47 RG and medium strength .047 differential. Around this core is the dynamic infusion pearl cover, the same cover from the Sky Raptor, and polished to a fine 5500 grit out of the box.

With these core numbers, and knowing what worked with the Sky Raptor, we decided to go with a 4.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 2LS layout. This has pretty much become my standard layout for pearl symmetrical balls as it tends to really highlight what the piece is good at on its own, without my tendencies or flaws in my release getting in the way. It’s not a perfect science, but its a layout that gives me the best information to give to you, and that’s what matters to us.

AND ON THE LANES… it’s basically the 2023 version of that ball EJ loved so much. All I could think when I was throwing this thing was this its a purple sigma sting. I’m not sure if it’s the core or the cover or just the combination of both, but I loved this shape. I could almost describe it as swoopy in the midlane and off the spot. It’s not really angular, but it still continues through the pins really well. Also, and this is a rare thing for me, I loved the balance of length and control of this out of box polished finish. Almost always I have to knock the shine off of balls to see the right shape, but the dynamic infusion pearl was just strong enough for me to trust this ball to not blow past the spot.

And honestly, this, just like the tank yellowjacket, but for much different reasons, feels like a shape that motiv has been missing for a while. Most of the shiny equipment for the last year has been sort of underwhelming and struggled to generate angle through pins. The cores seemed to want to lock up in the midlane, but this VIP Sigma is just a great shaping bowling ball. The versatility is there, I would bet that with some surface it could even be a benchmark on drier house conditions. It does a lot of what motiv is good at in spinning up in the midlane well, and getting off the spot aggressively, and I’m glad to see that return to their lineup.

For comparisons, I grabbed my supra rally and the roto grip duo. The supra was a true step down from the sigma, which I really enjoyed. Sometimes these lower end balls are so clean that they create a ton of downlane angle and appear stronger than the piece above it, but these two played well off of each other, with the supra being about a zone less than the sigma. The duo is very similar in cover strength to the sigma, but shapes much differently off the end of the pattern, going more forward through pins. Both of these shapes have their value, but in most league settings, the more your ball wants to run sideways through the pins, the higher your carry percentage will be, and the sigma has the duo beat slightly on that front.

For potential downsides in the VIP Sigma, I don’t see a lot of them. It’s very clean through the fronts, so if you’re speed dominant or have a limited axis of rotation, it might not be the one for you. But other than that, it performs as you’d expect. It’s a good, symmetrical pearl bowling ball that reproduces the shape from the sigma sting, a ball we all know was very good, very well.

Pairing this piece with the trusty venom shock and jackal ghost would give motivated bowlers a great set of options. You’d have three of the most trusted shapes motiv has ever produced in your bag, all with their own distinct ways of getting from the foul line through the pins. What else can a bowler ask for?

So for my recommendations for the types of bowlers I think match up well with this piece, the first is rev dominant bowlers. The VIP sigma is clean enough to trust it when there’s a lot of friction, but is smoother around the corner than many other symmetrical pearls. If you find yourself struggling to keep the ball on the correct side of the headpin when there’s a lot of friction, this piece should help you control that well. The second is low tilt bowlers. Typically the struggle for bowlers without tilt is when they have to play steep angles. The nice part about the sigma is that you can play further outside, and still have it be clean down the lane, and not jump through the headpin. It’ll keep you in your wheelhouse for longer periods of time.

But no matter what your style, I think a ton of bowlers are going to appreciate having this ball in their arsenal
