The new YangWang U9 supercar from BYD recently debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show, and it has some interesting tricks up its sleeve in addition to many of the amenities we've come to expect from EVs. These include a cutting-edge suspension technology unlike any we've seen before.

While introducing the electric supercar in China, BYD's YangWang brand showed it bouncing up and down on its way to the stage. This is unusual for a supercar and more akin to what we'd expect from an innovative luxury sedan or SUV, such as Mercedes did with the GLE's air suspension a few years ago. However, BYD's system is far more complex and remarkable.

YangWang's 'Disus-X' suspension technology is hidden behind the U9's skin. This system, which includes BYD's Intelligent Damping Body Control System (Disus-C), Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System (Disus-P), and Intelligent Air Body Control System (Disus-A), provides complex vertical, lateral, and longitudinal motion control, "outpacing its peers" with their most advanced systems, according to BYD. The bouncing demonstrated by the automaker is entirely dependent on the kinetic power of the suspension.

During the presentation, a second, even more exciting video of the U9 was also shown. It depicts the brilliant yellow supercar driving on three wheels, with the suspension system used to lift up the corner without a wheel in order to avoid rubbing the brake rotor on the ground. Customers are unlikely to utilize this feature frequently, but it may come in handy if they have a catastrophic tire or wheel problem.

“The BYD DiSus System is the first self-developed intelligent body control system launched by a Chinese automobile company, marking the breakthrough from zero to one,” chairman and president of BYD, Wang Chuanfu said. “The BYD DiSus System will further secure the globally pioneering stance for BYD in the industry.”

According to BYD, the system can also be utilized to reduce body roll, lower the likelihood of a rollover, and assist in full-throttle acceleration and emergency braking.

Of course, the U9 is about much more than its fascinating suspension system. It is built on the brand's Yisigang EV platform and has four electric motors that provide 1,100 hp and 944 lb-ft (1,280 Nm) of torque. It will reportedly reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 2 seconds and travel over 435 miles (700 km) on a single charge.
