Come celebrate the colourful Hindu festival at Birrarung Marr

Birrarung Marr is about to be splashed in a rainbow of colours this autumn as the Melbourne Holi Festival makes its debut in the space. The event celebrates Holi, the Hindu festival of colours which is held annually to mark the end of winter (in the northern hemisphere) and signifies the triumph of good over evil.

This will be the first year the Melbourne Holi Festival will be held at Birrarung Marr, with the event moving from Federation Square (where it was previously hosted) and extended to two days of festivities. Expect plenty of entertainment like Bollywood dancing, henna stalls and live dhol performances (Indian drumming). Little ones are welcome and there will be kids rides on site as well as DJ sets.

The organisers will also store plenty of brightly coloured powders. Traditionally attendees cover each other in the various coloured dusts, running around and splattering absolutely everyone whether they know them or not. The powders are stain-free and non-toxic but we’d still advise against paint-bombing anyone not participating in the festival.

Food stalls and miscellaneous vendors will also be there on the day. The Melbourne Holi Festival is free to attend but registration is required.
