The phonetic symbols for the a and u vowels sounds are /æ/ and /ʌ/.

In this tutorial I show you the 2 reasons why a and u pronunciation sound similar in English.

I then show you the 3 simple ways to tell the difference. Learning these will give you clear and confident English Pronunciation.

The 3 differences between a and u pronunciation are:

A pronunciation:
Lips - your lips should be stretched wide apart (use the drum stick technique to make sure your lips are wide enough)
Tongue - for 'a' pronunciation your tongue is right behind your teeth
Tongue Height - for 'a' pronunciation, the highest bit of your tongue is at the front of your mouth.

U pronunciation:
Lips - your lips are relaxed and closer together for the British u pronunciation
Tongue - Your tongue is further back in the mouth (watch how I pull my tongue back)
Tongue height - for u pronunciation, the highest part of my tongue is further back in the mouth.

Although a and u pronunciation can sound similar, by understanding the 2 things that make these English vowels similar, and the 3 things that make them different, you will develop clear a and u pronunciation...

And a clear British Accent.
