The prefecture conducted a joint civil protection drill, simulating a situation where residents of the Sakishima Islands would need to evacuate. The exercise confirmed cooperation among 94 organizations, including the Cabinet Secretariat, airlines, shipping companies, local governments, and Kyushu prefectures that would serve as evacuation destinations.

Participants discussed evacuation methods and how to assist people with special needs, identifying key challenges in transporting those who require extra care. The plan estimates that around 120,000 Sakishima Islands residents could be evacuated by air and sea to Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture within six days.

Associate Professor Nakabayashi of Nihon University praised the prefecture and municipalities for considering concrete evacuation systems and stated that ongoing discussions responding to residents’ concerns will help ensure safety and peace of mind.
