In a doubles fact, the numbers being added are the same. The sums of doubles facts are even numbers. We can use doubles facts to find sums that are near doubles facts. We can count on 1, or we can count back 1. If we know the sum of a doubles fact, we can find the sum of a near doubles fact by comparing the addends. Then we decide if we need to add 1 or subtract 1 from the doubles fact. The numbers we add together are addends. The answer in an addition problem is the sum. We circle doubles facts we can use to find the sum of a given addition problem. One of the addends must be the same as the doubles fact. We write a doubles fact that we can use to find a sum. We write the sum. We solve a word problem that involves addition using doubles facts.
