Dr. Vandana Shiva is a world-recognized environmentalist, activist, physicist, feminist, and philosopher of science. She trained as a Physicist at the University of Punjab, and completed her PhD at Western University. She later shifted to inter-disciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy, which she carried out at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, India.

She founded an independent institute, the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology in Dehra Dun, dedicated to high quality and independent research to address the most significant ecological and social issues of our times. She also founded Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, and to promote organic farming and fair trade. She helped to establish the gender unit at the International Centre for Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, and was a founding Board Member of the Women, Environment and Development Organization (WEDO).

Dr. Shiva’s awards include the Right Livelihood Award, the Earth Day International Award, the Sydney Peace Prize, the Doshi Bridgebuilder Award, the Calgary Peace Prize, the Thomas Merton Award, the Fukuoka Award, and the Prism of Reason Award, amongst many others. She is the author of more than twenty books, including Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace (2005), Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, and Profit (2002), Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed (2007), Soil Not Oil (2008), Staying Alive (2010), Biopiracy: The Plunder of Nature & Knowledge (2011), Monocultures of the Mind: Perspectives on Biodiversity (2011), and Making Peace with the Earth (2013).
