धनबाद को आप जिन भी कारणों से जानते होंगे, उनमें एक वजह कोयला ज़रूर होगी। झारखंड का ये ज़िला देश का कोल कैपिटल कहलाता है। और जब बात कोयले की होती है, तो याद आती है फ़िल्म गैंग्स ऑफ़ वासेपुर—जिसकी पूरी कहानी बदले और कोयले के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। और उस कहानी का शहर भी वही है—धनबाद।

लेकिन फ़िल्म तो फ़िल्म थी… असली कहानी उससे कहीं ज़्यादा पेचीदा और कहीं ज़्यादा डरावनी है।
कोयले ने जहाँ एक तरफ़ देश की इंडस्ट्री को ताक़त दी, वहीं दूसरी तरफ़ इसने जन्म दिया माफ़िया, गैंगवार और करप्शन की अंधेरी दुनिया को।

धनबाद की गलियों में सिर्फ़ कोयले की धूल ही नहीं उड़ती थी, बल्कि गोलियों की गूँज भी सुनाई देती रही। नेता, अफ़सर, माफ़िया—सबका खेल इसी काले सोने के इर्द-गिर्द चलता रहा।

और आज हम बात करेंगे इसी सच की—धनबाद, कोयला और माफ़िया की उस असली कहानी की, जो फ़िल्मी स्क्रीन से कहीं बड़ी और कहीं ज़्यादा सच्ची है।

हमारे साथ हैं प्रमोद कुमार गुप्ता—भारत सरकार के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी रहे, प्रिंसिपल चीफ़ कमिश्नर ऑफ़ इनकम टैक्स के पद से सेक्रेटरी रैंक में रिटायर हुए। साल 2021 में उन्हें हैमरेजिक स्ट्रोक हुआ, लेकिन इसके बावजूद उन्होंने लिखने का शौक़ ज़िंदा रखा और पिछले चार सालों में लगातार चार किताबें लिखीं।

धनबाद की दुनिया को उन्होंने अपनी आँखों से देखा और फिर लिखा किताब “Dhanbad – The Economics of Coal – The Mafia”। इस किताब में सिर्फ़ सिस्टम की परतें नहीं खुलतीं, बल्कि उनके अपने अनुभव भी सामने आते हैं—कैसे उन्होंने कोल माफ़िया से सीधी टक्कर ली, क्या-क्या झेला और क्यों ये कहानी आज भी उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है।

When you think of Dhanbad, the one thing that almost always comes to mind is coal. This district of Jharkhand is known as the Coal Capital of India. And whenever coal is mentioned, it instantly reminds us of the film Gangs of Wasseypur—a story built entirely around revenge and coal. And the city at the heart of that story was also Dhanbad.

But that was just a film… The real story of Dhanbad is far more complex, and far scarier.
Coal not only powered India’s industries, it also gave birth to a dark world of mafia, gang wars, and corruption.

In the streets of Dhanbad, it wasn’t just coal dust that filled the air—gunshots echoed too. Politicians, officials, the mafia—all were part of the same game revolving around this “black gold.”

And today, we’ll be talking about that very truth—the real story of Dhanbad, coal, and the mafia, a story much bigger and far more real than anything you’ve seen on the big screen.

Joining us is Pramod Kumar Gupta—a senior officer of the Government of India, who retired as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. In 2021, he suffered a haemorrhagic stroke, but despite that, he kept his passion for writing alive and, in the last four years, has authored four books.

He has seen the world of Dhanbad with his own eyes and documented it in his book “Dhanbad – The Economics of Coal – The Mafia.” The book doesn’t just peel back the layers of the system—it also brings in his personal experiences: how he confronted the coal mafia head-on, what he went through, and why this story is still just as relevant today.
