Atmospheric rivers have a lot of warm air masses and water vapor originated from the tropical Pacific Ocean near the equator.

Sometimes less Atmospheric Rivers (AR) lead to fundamental water supply in local regions. The atmospheric rivers deliver water vapor in the form of either rain or snow.

It makes an impact on disastrous flooding and landslides across the west coast of North America including mountainous regions, determined by the scale and extent of Atmospheric Rivers.

Like the category of hurricanes on a scale from 1 to 5, AR Category rating 1 is primarily beneficial while AR Category rating 5 is mainly dangerous. Recent events of Atmospheric rivers linked strongly to the tremendous scale of flooding, and more frequent landslides in British Columbia Canada in November 2021.

Here is an updated Atmospheric River by Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) in Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

It’s an example of AR on January 10 2022. It’s useful for the forecast of an Atmospheric River including heavy precipitation.
At that time, there was more than 18 cm (7 inches) of precipitation in the west coast of North America.
It is possible for a Flooding event by southeastern British Columbia owing to both the effect of heavy rainfall and existing snowpack at the lower terrains.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has a plan to launch an early warning system of Atmospheric rivers by the fall 2022 based on CBC news.
