What causes ear pain? So it turns out your ears are actually connected to your nose through a tube called the eustachian tube. This tube goes from inside your ear all the way to the back of your nose, and it's basically back here. So if you have swelling either from allergies or sinusitis or a cold, it can cause the swelling in your nose to cause swelling in your eustachian tube, and that leads to ear pain and pressure.

Sometimes this also happens if you go up in altitude, like going up to the mountains, which is, you know, my favorite thing to do, or if you go up on a plane. Either way, one of the things you can do is take a nasal decongestant like Afrin or Sudafed right before you go up in the plane or before you go up to altitude, or if your ears are painful and you can see if it decongests your nose and that might actually improve the ear pain.
