In recent years Casio has released several new watches to celebrate the company's own legacy. The newest release of the G-Shock GW-5000R is a tribute to the very first, original G-Shock which was released in 1983. Over the decades, The company has always sold watches which were based on that original G-Shock, the DW-5000C. Those other watches were made with various differences in colors, functions, building materials and more. For the most part, the changes have reflected improvements with added functions and features.

But there were always folks who wanted to be able to buy that original G-Shock, exactly as it was made in 1983. Well, the new DW-5000R is not exactly like the original DW-5000C but it's pretty close. Like the original, this new one is made with a stainless steel case and a screw-down, stainless steel case back. The colors and overall look are nearly identical. There are other minor differences but, in the end, if you've wanted an original 1983 G-Shock but you just couldn't find one in good condition for a reasonable price, this watch may be for you.

The new DW-5000R sold out quickly after it was released at the end of the year 2024, but Casio says this will not be a limited edition watch, so it's expected to be back in stock soon (or now, depending on when you might be reading this). The $200 price tag might not be for everyone but, for the dedicated collector, it may be okay.
