• Myth (Film): The Dilophosaurus is shown as a small, slender creature, roughly the height of a person's chest (about 1.2–1.5 meters tall). This size was likely chosen in the movie to avoid confusion with the Velociraptor and to create a more surprising threat.
• Reality: Dilophosaurus wetherilli was a formidable, large predator. It was one of the first giant meat-eating dinosaurs, measuring around 6 to 7 meters (20 to 23 feet) in length and weighing approximately 400 kilograms (880 pounds)—closer to the size of a modern grizzly or brown bear.
2. Venom and Spitting
• Myth (Film/Book): The dinosaur possesses the unique and horrifying ability to spit corrosive, blinding venom at its prey and rivals, accompanied by a high-pitched cooing sound.
• Reality: There is absolutely no scientific evidence to suggest that Dilophosaurus (or any other known dinosaur) possessed venom glands, the muscular structure needed for spitting, or specialized ducts for venom delivery. This feature was a complete invention for the Jurassic Park franchise, likely inspired by modern spitting cobras.
3. The Neck Frill
• Myth (Film/Book): When threatened, the Dilophosaurus dramatically unfurls a large, colorful, extendable neck frill, similar to a modern frill-necked lizard.
• Reality: Like the venom, the neck frill is a pure Hollywood fabrication. The neck frill is made of soft tissue which would not fossilize, but there is no skeletal evidence—such as specialized neck vertebrae or muscle attachments—to support the presence of such a structure.
The Iconic Crests (Accurate Feature)
The one feature that is accurate to the real dinosaur is the distinctive pair of bony crests running parallel on top of its skull.
• Reality: These crests were likely covered in keratin and were too fragile for fighting. Scientists believe they were used for display, such as species recognition or attracting a mate, giving the dinosaur its name: Dilophosaurus means "two-crested lizard."
In summary, the real Dilophosaurus was a large, fast, non-venomous predator from the Early Jurassic, known only by its delicate double-crests, completely unlike the smaller, frilled, and spitting monster of cinema.
