Five people were shot on Tuesday in an attack at a school for adults in #Sweden, police said, but they declined to comment on local media reports that several people had been killed. The perpetrator is believed to be among those injured and a search is continuing at the school for more possible victims, a police spokesperson told a news conference. The perpetrator's motive was not immediately known. The shooting took place in #Orebro, some 200 km (125 miles) west of #Stockholm, at the #Risbergska school for adults who did not complete their formal education or failed to get the grades to continue to higher education. It is located on a campus that also houses schools for children.
A father, Johannes #Sjöberg, shared that he had been in constant contact with his daughter via text messages for over two hours during the incident. She was initially frightened but remained calm, praying for safety. His daughter witnessed blood and distress, but teachers helped secure the students in a safe area. Later, she was one of the first to be escorted out to a nearby collection point. The father expressed initial emotional distress but now feels calmer, having learned from his daughter that the suspect may have committed suicide, though he cannot confirm this.
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) SVT reporter: "Your daughter is here at the school. Can you tell us a little bit about what she has said and what contact you have had?"
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Johannes Sjöberg, father to a daughter who was at the school: "We have had text message contacts all the time for over two and a half hours, and she came to school 5 minutes before the whole thing and has been very scared, but felt calm and safe and prayed to God all the time. We have faith in God, but she has prayed to God and been calm and felt that it will be fine. Then what she has seen is blood and she has gotten... The teachers have been very good and helped them and brought them in and locked the door and so on."
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) SVT reporter: "How is your daughter now?"
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Johannes Sjöberg, father to a daughter who was at the school: "She has actually... I have seen her. She has come into Myrorna which is a collection point. One of the first to come out. The second small group that came out, it looked like she was safe and giving witness statements and so on. She has come out and feels good. (Myrorna is a second-hand shop.)"
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) SVT reporter: "How is it for you as a parent to stand here and wait to see her again?"
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Johannes Sjöberg, father to a daughter who was at the school: "It was very moving and difficult at the beginning and easy to cry for the first hour and a half maybe, but now I feel calmer and hope and believe that this will end. If it hasn't, according to my daughter, then a perpetrator has committed suicide. Whether that's true or not, I don't know either, but that's what she said. She has seen blood and misery in there and many who have been panicked by the students in there. So it has been. A horrible experience, I understand."
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Roberto Eid Forest, Head of local police: "Early on we were able to establish that a shooting had taken place at the school, whereby the school was immediately invacuated. We also had a smoke situation that we were able to ascertain shortly afterwards, at 12:42, inside the premises of the school. Several injured people have been found with gunshot wounds. One of these injured persons is a person who we suspect may be the perpetrator. We have currently initiated a preliminary investigation into attempted murder, arson and serious weapons offenses. We have also invacuated several other schools because, as the regional police chief said, we are in an ongoing operation and somewhat unclear situation initially. And we have invacuated, let's see, we have invacuated, six schools and another restaurant nearby. Gradually, we are now emptying those schools as our situation becomes clearer. At the moment, we do not want the public or other people at the site, as it is an ongoing operation."
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Jonas Claeson, Director of Health and Medical Services in Örebro: "So far, five people have been admitted to the emergency room at Örebro University Hospital. Four of them have undergone surgery. Two are out of surgery and stable. One of those operated on is seriously injured and the person who has not been operated on is slightly injured."
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) members of the press: "There are no other suspects besides this person on the school board?"
SOUNDBITE (Swedish) Roberto Eid Forest, Head of local police: "We do not exclude that there are more suspects and it is also something that we are working on. In the further intensive stage now to try to find out why it has happened and if there are any more perpetrators. And that's also one of the reasons why we chose to invacuate, some additional schools, given the unclear situation."
