His primary goal was to ensure the survival of his kingdom by prioritising financial stability and avoiding any conflict with Rome. He astutely managed diplomatic relations, even sending his own son, **Demetrius**, to Rome as a hostage to secure his brother Antiochus's release. His reign was a quiet period of recovery, dictated by the constant need to pay the Roman debt, which led him to consider controversial measures such as seizing the treasury of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, as recounted in the Second Book of Maccabees.

Seleucus IV's reign ended abruptly with his assassination in 175 BC by his chief minister, **Heliodorus**. This act, likely motivated by a lust for power, led to a brief but unsuccessful attempt by Heliodorus to seize the throne. However, his usurpation was quickly thwarted by Seleucus's brother, **Antiochus IV**, who returned from Rome with crucial support and claimed the kingship. Ultimately, Seleucus IV's legacy is not defined by military victories or grand campaigns but by his practical approach to governance. He understood his kingdom's limitations in a world dominated by the Roman Republic and chose to focus on internal consolidation and peaceful recovery. His efforts during this crucial decade of peace allowed the Seleucid Empire to regain some strength and stability, setting the stage for the more ambitious and tumultuous reign of his successor, Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
