With the middle section from 'Dalek1', built in 1963 and believed to be the very first Dalek constructed by Shawcraft Models for the BBC, and the skirt section built in 1965, this hybrid dalek, which became known as Dalek 1-7, has probably the oldest surviving BBC Dalek sections in the world...and saw action against all of the Doctors in the original series, making a final appearance in 1988's 'Remembrance Of The Daleks'.
When the show was taken off air, this Dalek faced its greatest enemy....a large saw! The back of it was cut away, to create a 'walk-in' Dalek display which toured various BBC exhibitions (MOMI in London, then Llangollen, Wales) and allowed visitors to get inside and peer out through the neck mesh, seeing their reflection 'as a Dalek' in a large mirror. They could also talk into a modulated microphone, so their speech sounded like a Dalek. The display was at Llangollen in North Wales for some years before the BBC closed the Doctor Who exhibition.
When the 'Walk-In' was finally sold by Bonhams in 2011, the missing back sections from collector Chris Balcombe, who had purchased them from Droctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner ten years earlier at an auction at one of Longleat House's Dr Who Days, were re-united.
Sympathetic restoration was carried out by BAFTA award-winning effects expert Mike Tucker, who worked with this Dalek on the original series and continues to provide amazing model effects in the new series, as well as Red Dwarf and other sci-fi projects..
Chris has continued restoring the inside of the Dalek, and also made adjustments to the neck bin, bringing the level of the dome down by about an inch to bring it closer to its original appearance.
