This winter drive begins in St. Paul an der Gail, a small Alpine village in the Gail Valley (Gailtal) of southern Carinthia, Austria. The area lies between the Gailtal Alps to the south and the Carnic Alps along the Italian border, creating a wide valley shaped by glaciers and the Gail River. In January, the landscape is quiet, cold, and often lightly snow-covered, giving the village a peaceful winter atmosphere.
The journey follows road B111 (Gailtal Straße), one of the most scenic valley roads in Carinthia. This route runs parallel to the Gail River and passes through traditional Alpine settlements, farmland, and forested slopes. At 01:40 – Michelhofen, small houses and barns line the road, reflecting the rural character of the valley. Shortly after, at 05:54 – Feistritz an der Gail, the village appears nestled between open meadows and gentle mountain ridges, with classic Carinthian architecture and church towers visible from the road.
At 11:50, the drive briefly joins the A2 Süd Autobahn, Austria’s main east–west motorway connecting Vienna to Italy. This section allows a faster transition toward the border while still offering distant views of snow-dusted hills and mountain silhouettes.
At 16:10, the route crosses into Italy, entering the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. By 19:55 – Tarvisio, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Tarvisio sits at the intersection of three countries—Austria, Italy, and Slovenia—and is surrounded by the Julian Alps and Carnic Alps. The town is known for its winter sports culture and dense evergreen forests, which look especially striking under winter conditions.
At 21:45, the drive continues on SS54, heading toward the alpine hamlet of Fusine in Valromana. This narrow valley feels remote and untouched, with steep forested slopes rising on both sides. At 25:50 – Fusine in Valromana, traditional stone houses and wooden chalets appear against a mountain backdrop.
Soon after, at 31:45 – Fusine Laghi, the road passes near the famous Laghi di Fusine (Fusine Lakes), one of the most beautiful natural sites in the region. Even in winter, the frozen or partially frozen lakes reflect the surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps, creating a postcard-like scene.
At 32:25 – Fusine Confine and 34:10 – Valico di Fusine, the journey reaches the Italian–Slovenian border crossing, surrounded by dense forest and high mountain walls. Shortly after, at 34:30, the drive enters Rateče, Slovenia, following road 202, then road 201 at 36:39.
At 39:25 – Podkoren, the landscape opens slightly, revealing ski slopes and mountain pastures beneath the Julian Alps. By 42:50 – Kranjska Gora, Slovenia’s most famous Alpine resort town, the road is framed by dramatic peaks, including Mount Prisojnik and Mount Razor, known for their sharp limestone faces.
The journey ends at 44:34 – Log, a small and quiet settlement near Kranjska Gora, surrounded by forests and mountains. This final stretch captures the essence of winter driving in the Alps: peaceful roads, changing borders, and a seamless transition between Austrian valleys, Italian alpine lakes, and Slovenian mountain towns.
