"China: Through the Looking Glass has been two years in the making. As an idea it began rather modestly, as an exhibition to celebrate the centennial at the Department of Asian Art. Originally it was to be staged in the Anna Wintour Costumer Center and just three of the Chinese galleries. As our ambitions grew, so did the show's footprint, which came to incorporate all of the Chinese galleries on the second floor of the museum. The final imprint is approximately 30,000 square feet, almost three times the size of our usual spring shows."

MET REVEALS NEW SPRING EXHIBIT 'CHINA: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS'
Hollywood has long been fascinated with China. But that doesn't mean it has always represented it fully or accurately - far from it.
In the new exhibit "China: Through the Looking Glass," early Hollywood - and film in general - is just one of the lenses through which the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute explores the way Chinese art and aesthetics have been interpreted by the West over the years.
