Here is my guide to longevity in BJJ for those of us over 40, summarized for you:

[00:37] Ego is the Enemy of Longevity
The mindset of "toughing it out" or not being a "wuss" for tapping is the most expensive mistake you can make as an older grappler.
Unless you are a professional fighter or bouncer, you don't need to train like your life depends on it every session. Most of us are here for fun and health, not to get into street fights.

[04:28] Injuries Are Permanent Disabilities
After age 35-40, there are no "minor" injuries. Every injury—whether to your spine, knees, or shoulders—becomes a permanent little disability you carry for life.
Getting hurt is expensive, not just in medical bills (MRIs, treatments), but in time lost from work, family, and training.

[08:42] Drop the "No Ego" Myth
We all have egos, but you must check yours. If you are caught in a submission, just tap.
Don't be proud of cauliflower ear. It's not a badge of honor; it's cartilage damage that will ruin your hearing as you age and make wearing hearing aids difficult or expensive.

[11:03] Prevention Over Escape
The secret isn't learning how to escape a fully locked submission; it's understanding why you got caught in the first place.
Reverse engineer your failures. If you always get Kimura'd, stop planting your hand on the mat. Preventing the setup is far more effective and safer than fighting out of a deep submission.

[14:19] Know When to Fold
In training, never let a submission go to 100%. If your partner has you at 90% dead to rights, just tap. There is no glory in escaping that last 10% if it costs you a torn ligament.
Save the "Hail Mary" escapes for high-stakes competition. In the gym, prioritize living to train another day.
