1. In this activity, we will learn about the advantage of modern irrigation methods.
2. Different steps involved in agriculture are land preparation, sowing, irrigation (watering plants), adding fertilisers and harvesting.
3. Plants require regular supply of water so that they can grow.
4. What are the sources of water for irrigation? Rain water, rivers, lakes, wells, reservoirs etc.
5. We need to transport this water from their source to agriculatural land using pipes, tankers etc.
6. In earlier days people used canals to get water from these sources.
7. The major disadvantage was loss of water due to evaporation and seepage.
8. Lets understand conventional and modern irrigation method by doing a farming activity
9. Use tray, seed, beaker, soil, manure and dropper for this activity.
10. Fill two trays with soil as shown I. Put some manure in the tray and seeds for farming.
11. Pour water in one of the tray using beaker. For other tray, use dropper to water only the area near the seeds only, ensure you don’t water remaining soil.
12. Think and discuss what are the differences in both methods and what are the advantages in the watering seeds using a dropper over the beaker.
13. Are the results of plant growth similar? In which case, we were able to save more water?
