“This AI Tech Can Rebuild Reality — Gaussian Splatting Explained”

Boscombe Down Aviation Collection Museum / SABS MKIIA bombsight

In 2019 the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection Museum near Salisbury embarked on a multi-year project to build the front fuselage section of a B1 Special Avro Lancaster bomber using original parts to create a unique exhibit as this is the only B1 Special Avro Lancaster in existence. BDAC director Ron Fulton and his team worked with World War 2 aviation collector Malcolm Goosey who provided the original Avro Lancaster parts. This variant of the Avro Lancaster was specially modified to carry the 10 ton "Grand Slam" earthquake bomb which was used to destroy certain targets that conventional bombs could not, such as bridges and viaducts. The bombing technique required a high degree of accuracy and precision when releasing the ten ton bomb from as heights between 11,500 and 19,000 feet. In addition to having a unique front fuselage section, the BDAC museum have the only complete version of the Stabilized Automatic MKIIA bombsight in the world that was used in the B1 Special Avro Lancaster. This bombsight was a key British technological innovation which was developed during World War 2.

The owner of the front fuselage exhibit Malcolm Goosey wanted a digital exhibit that visitors could watch to learn about the aircraft and the SABS MKIIA bombsight. Film producer Andrew Panton with the help of digital artist and animator Piotr Forkasiewicz produced several shorts films featuring the B1 Special Avro Lancaster but needed to create a 3D model of the SABS MKIIA bombsight which could be included in the digital display. Andrew sought help to create the 3D model through the KIRI engine team based in China who indicated that he needed to photograph the bombsight with high quality pictures. With the help of Stephen Ryan was possible to capture the necessary images, these were sent to KIRI and a 3D model was created. This 3D model will now be part of a new digital exhibition on permanent display at BDAC to help educate visitors about how the bombsight was used to drop the ten ton bomb with great precision and highlight a piece of history that very few people know about.

Here is an interactive viewer based on my own Gaussian Splatting process based on the images I shot.
