Northern Elephant Seals are mating at the beach of Ano Nuevo State Park. The elephant seal breeding season begins at Ano Nuevo in December, when the first males arrive. Pregnant females come ashore to have pups beginning in mid-December. They mate about 24 days after giving birth. Adult famales may mate several times before returning to the ocean, leaving their pups behind.
