Muskies Jaw Snap the Super Shadow Rap! Pike and Musky fishing Northwest Ontario.

Muskie and northern pike fishing near Kenora again in Northwestern Ontario for a day trip (an evening and the following morning). A good number of large muskies located, mostly on the edge of rock structures using cranks and rubber, and some decent pike action in the weeds on blades. The Super Shadow Rapala (I keep calling it an X-Rap which of course I really like too) is really balanced nicely for some effective glide and pause (and slow sink) action that really gets the attention of some muskies who follow in to try and figure out what it is. The first time you ever see a muskie "lip curl" on your lure you get a bit flustered as hard to know how to react. As a biologist I suspect this is a musky using all its senses (including taste and pores on face) to try and figure out what the lure is before committing. Keep in mind that predators are selective about what they eat and some things don't go down easy (in the same way a skunk or porcupine would be a bad idea for coyote to take on). I get a couple nips "deadsticking" with one large muskie and I naturally get a bit excited - close call, but no cigar. My trolling motor spring-assist breaks soon after and cuts my trip a bit shorter than intended...
