The first month of 2023 is already gone, but the year is still far from over — especially for those who expect to experience amazing things ahead. For amateur astronomers around the world, last year was a box full of surprises, with the sightings of two total lunar eclipses, a solar eclipse and a rare alignment of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

So it's a wonder this year won't bring the same kind of fun for space connoisseurs, right? None of that. For those who intend to keep an eye on what is happening in the sky, it is better to be prepared for a series of phenomena that will become visible to humans in the coming months. Check out just 4 dazzling celestial events you need to watch in 2023!
1. Conjunction of planets, In astronomy, a conjunction occurs when a planet appears near a moon, another planet or a star. These conjunctions occur quite frequently and don't have any deep astronomical significance, but they tend to be very enjoyable to watch live.

In early March, the two planets in our Solar System will begin to converge in the southwestern sky: Venus and Jupiter. It will be possible to see both with the naked eye. Although the two planets appear to be right next to each other, they will still be millions of kilometers apart.
2. Lyrid Meteor Shower, Meteor showers usually occur when the Earth passes through debris left by comets and asteroids - which explains why they happen at the same time every year. In 2023 it could not be different and around mid-April we will be able to see the Lyrid meteor shower up close.

The Lyrids originate from Comet Thatcher, which orbits the Sun every 415 years. This is one of the oldest rains recorded by humans, with observations dating back to 687 BC.


3. Super Blue Moon Those looking up at the sky on the night of August 31 are in for a pleasant surprise: the full moon will appear a little bigger and brighter than usual. The reason for this phenomenon is because the moon will be closer to Earth's elliptical orbit, which creates a supermoon.

Four supermoons will appear consecutively this year: July 3rd, August 1st, August 31st and September 29th. As August will have two full moons, the second one is considered a blue moon – which only happens every 2.5 years.
4. Annular Solar Eclipse In mid-October, an annular solar eclipse will be visible over the southwestern United States. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. However, as the Moon will not completely cover the Sun this year, a glorious "ring of fire" can be seen in some places on our planet.

Such an annular solar eclipse can last up to 12 minutes, although the maximum duration for that year is about five minutes.
