“This is a moment in which the regime must understand that not only Venezuelans are determined to go all the way. These repressive actions against members of the commando (campaign team), these attacks, these insults, go against them. They no longer instill fear as before; on the contrary, the people are empowered, they become brave, and they organize themselves. It is going to be a civic celebration where all Venezuelans will be in the streets exercising our right and defending our vote”.

STORYLINE:
Venezuelan police attempted to seize the vehicle that opposition leader Maria Corina Machado had used on Saturday during a caravan in the northeastern Venezuelan city of Maturin.

At the end of Machado's rally through the city, the police attempted to confiscate the vehicle, which generated the reaction of some of Machado's followers who were still present.

Soaking wet in heavy rain, a man kneeled in front of it, begging officials not to take it.

Police officers eventually left the place without taking the truck.

The incident came days after the opposition denounced that the head of security of Machado's campaign was taken into custody.

According to Machado and the opposition, this adds to the over 72 people arrested since the campaign started on July 4.

After winning an opposition-organized primary last year, Machado was banned from running against Venezuela's President and candidate Nicolás Maduro.

Instead, she is crisscrossing the country with a hand-selected stand-in candidate, Edmundo González, a retired diplomat previously unknown to Venezuelans.
