(7 May 2015) Daimler showed off its new self-driving truck in Las Vegas on Tuesday, betting that automated tractor-trailers will be rolling along highways before self-driving cars will be cruising around the suburbs.
Thanks to sensors and cameras installed on the vehicle, the truck drives itself, giving the driver time to relax.
No hands on the steering wheel and no feet on the pedals are required when the truck is in the "highway pilot" mode.
The company believes that because there are no intersections on highways, no red lights and no pedestrians, autonomous trucks have a much bigger chance to be hitting the roads quicker than autonomous cars.
The driver would still need to sit in the seat to monitor the functions of the moving vehicle, but would be relieved of some of his duties, said Steve Nadig, chief engineer at Daimler Trucks North America.
It will be years before an autonomous truck hits the highway for anything more than tests and demonstrations, the company said.
